Rutherford School is situated in South Croydon and is very accessible from the A23. Heading down the A23 through Coulsdon, Purley and towards Croydon. Turn right …moreonto Upland Road and then turn left onto Selsdon Road B275. At mini-roundabout take the 3rd exit onto Croham Road B243. Continue up Croham Road, turning left onto Melville Avenue. Arrive at Rutherford School on your left.
Rutherford School is a mixed day school for children between the ages of 3-19 years who have profound and multiple learning difficulties with physical disabilities and complex medical needs; many also have visual and hearing impairments. We are very grateful to have exclusive use of their gorgeous hydrotherapy pool during our class times.
Classes here run on Saturday mornings which means there is ample parking on Melville Avenue. Once parked please make your way to the entrance of the school. Please may we also ask parents to leave any Push chairs/buggy’s/ car seats in the hallway and not into the changing rooms.
Reception & Facilities
When you arrive at the school and enter the building the changing facilities are all clearly sign posted. There are two smaller changing rooms on the left hand side, changing room 2 has a baby changing wall unit. Changing room three is through the lobby and down the slop past the swimming pool door and is clearly sign posted. This changing area is large and used as a group changing room. In addition, the safest place to change your baby is on the floor and we recommend you bring your travel changing mat along with you.
Please arrive 10/15 minutes before the start of your class, to enable you to get ready and to familiarise you and your little one to the environment. On your first day any swimwear orders will be ready and waiting for you to collect poolside.
The Pool
The hydrotherapy pool measures 3 x 7 meters and runs at a gorgeous 35/36 (like a bath) degrees with a depth of 1.2 metres throughout. It is a fantastic facility for teaching both babies and toddlers swimming and we are extremely grateful to Rutherford School for allowing us to have exclusive use of the pool during our class times. For Health and Safety reasons we ask parents not to carry their child into the water down the steps. So for babies, please could you pass them to me whilst you enter the pool and for toddlers please sit them on the poolside and I will be with them until you arrive in the pool.
The poolside area is warm with a few chairs for you to sit before your class starts and in addition for family and friends to come and watch too. With regards to the poolside area and health and safety, please can you ensure your little ones do not run around the poolside area. There is specialist equipment in the pool room including hoists, please be careful and aware that these objects are on the walls. We also operate a no shoes on poolside policy, so for non-swimmers we ask them to remove their shoes as you come into the building.
